Proper Use and Avoiding Excessive Down Pressure with your SBS, LLC wear items

Our products are designed and produced using top quality materials. Each is the result of years of development and refinement, while building our personal snow clearing experience. Our goal is to create products using top quality materials which will provide seasons of residential use. These are wear products and they are designed to protect the surface and implement against the abrasive wear which steel on concrete, asphalt or any other surface creates. In doing so, the materials are going to show some signs of wear during normal use. Used correctly, our snowplow and snow pusher edges and snowblower wear bars should provide seasons of use for typical residential applications. Commercial users should expect to see more wear due to their volume of use.

The number one cause of excessive wear on any of these parts is using excessive down pressure on the implement when clearing snow. If you use the correct amount of down pressure, your experience with these products should be very satisfying.

How to use the correct amount of down pressure to clear the pavement and extend the useful life of your product.

  1. Lower the implement until it is touching the pavement and then stop lowering, once the edge or wear surface is on the pavement.

  2. Avoid “going to Float Mode” automatically, as it usually diminishes the implements clearing results due to reduced steering control of the tractor of machine being used to clear the snow.

  3. Make sure you are using rear ballast on your machine, to maintain proper balance front to rear on the machine.

  4. You should be able to clear snow with a blade, blower or pusher in an “S” pattern while cleaning the pavement.

  5. If the plow or pusher’s rubber edge is severely bent back during use, you have too much down pressure.

  6. If the tractor pushes through turns or refuses to steer correctly, its either too much down pressure on the implement or a lack of machine ballast or both. Always start with how you lower the implement to the pavement and go from there, making sure the implement is making contact with the surface, but that the down pressure doesn’t exceed the needed amounts to properly clear snow.

  7. If the tractors front wheels are spinning and going straight while the steering wheel is turned, you have too much down pressure and or lack proper ballast, etc.

Warranty coverage and its limitations

We want our customers to be happy with thier purchases from our company. We know first hand what its like to spend your money on something and to find its a disappointment in some way. If you have concerns about the SBS, LLC product you purchased from us, contact us to discuss. Please send photos or other means of sharing the specific concerns with us. We will work with you to resolve the issues. It’s the right thing to do.

Due to the unique conditions and manners in which our products are used, we can not guarantee how long any product will last or how it will wear. We have seen and heard the stories about something be installed that was bought on EBay and it not lasting for one plowing session. We make quality products with the top quality materials. If you aren’t pleased with the product, let us know. Fortunately, I can say this is a very rare occurrence as most customers are very pleased and the most common comment we hear is “I wish I have bought this product a long time ago”. That’s what we all like to feel about something we purchase.

An important note about Wet, Heavy Snow and its impact on SNOW-CLEARING results

  1. Snow, which is very wet and heavy, and when the air temperatures are 30F or warmer, is the worst snow-clearing condition.

  2. These conditions will require special accommodations and actions to clear the snow. These can include clearing smaller widths of snow per push or similar adjustments to your approach and style. Basically, do what you must to clear the snow.

  3. Go slower, make shorter pushes of snow, and plan on throwing snow closer than normal. Avoid throwing the snow where you have to clear it again as each time the snow runs through the blower, it is compacted and harder to throw again,

  4. During these difficult conditions, you may have to clear your driveway side to side instead of end to end or another such approach.

  5. Just as you personally can’t lift double or triple the normal weight you lift, the same applies to the snow-clearing implements. Push smaller amounts, push them shorter distances, and do what you must to clear the snow off the pavement.

  6. DO NOT make big changes to your equipment or set up during such snowfalls, as these conditions are usually the exception and not the normal snow clearing conditions. Instead, modify your approach to achieve the end task. I have spoken with people who were ready to trade their equipment for something new when no such actions are needed or would be helpful.

  7. Adding additional rear ballast when using front snow clearing implements will help offset the extreme weight of the wet snow. But once the conditions return to normal, then prepare to return your machine to its “normal” ballast configurations, etc.

While the Rubber Plow Edges and the UHMW Plow Edges are more gentle on the pavement, operator care still needs to be used.

With some practice, it’s certainly possible to clear snow on lawn and grass areas with our rubber plow edges and not cause displace the grass or cause serious damage. Be aware that when you use any implement to clear snow off the lawn and grass areas, those areas may experience some “freeze damage” on the grass layer, which is not covered with snow after clearing. This freeze damage normally grows out of the grass within a mowing or two of the lawn the next spring. I have done this for years and the lawn areas blend back in and aren’t apparent after the lawn has resumed growing. But its also important to not damage the grass with the blade edge when clearing the snow.

One of the most popular parts of using the rubber plow edges is the ability to push snow off the pavement onto the grass and not tear up the lawn edges as the steel plow edge usually does. When pushing snow off the pavement and onto the grass, its important to lift the plow or pusher a small amount, just as you exit the paved area onto the grass area, to help prevent damage to the lawn. Usually, an inch or two of edge lift, will help protect the lawn areas. This also will help the plow push snow over sprinkler heads, irrigation control valve boxes and other surface mounted items. Always take care to slightly lift the plow and you should have very few concerns with damage to grass areas.

The UHMW edges have a sharp edge that can grab the lawn and tear it loose, just as the steel plow edge. Make sure to raise any implements with UHMW edges a couple of inches when leaving pavement and pushing onto lawn areas. The UHMW is nonabrasive to the surface as are the rubber plow edges. However, the crisp leading edge of the UHMW can still displace grass as well as remove some pavement surface repairs. If your pavement has “crack filling” or “surface repairs”, you will want the down pressure on plow edges and blowers to be lifted over these repairs to avoid the UHMW edge potentially displacing or damaging the repairs.

When pavement repairs are made properly, most are durable and resilient to the plow edges, snow blower wear bars, etc. Just know that in some instances, the crisp edge can grab these surface repairs and loosen them, damage the repairs and even completely remove them from the pavement. This is why it’s always prudent to avoid excessive down pressure when clearing snow as it can have other consequences than prematurely wearing out the edge or wear bar. Also, asphalt is an ever-moving product and it changes with the ground freeze and thaw cycles, etc. This is why asphalt often has cracks after a few years of use. Please always use care and limit the down pressure applied to all pavement surfaces for the best results.

A final word, about SBS, LLC wear items and using snow clearing implements….

There is going to be some wear on these items during normal use. When using proper down pressure and not striking fixed objects, etc, these products should last the average residential snow-clearing customer several seasons. They are very durable and wear exceptionally well. I have personally plowed as many as 400 residential driveways with our standard rubber plow edge on a 54” up to 87” wide snow plow. If used appropriately, you should see seasons of use from the products. But sometimes things happen. Items are run into, run over or other damage occurs. If these things happen, replacement might be required sooner.

We produce products we know work and have extensively used them ourselves. All of the materials we use, have been tested extensively in real world applications and should meet our customers needs. If you have any questions at any time, do not hesitate to contact us so we can assist you. We are glad to help. Thank you for working with us and we sincerely appreciate your business.
