CTA makes a great plow but for some customers, it needs a robust UHMW composite plow edge to provide the surface clearing that only a UHMW edge can provide. Quiet, non surface abrasion snow clearing, which can scrape snow and ice, but stop the abrasion damage of a steel plow edge. For those customers, a SBS UHMW edge offers a great solution.

We offer a range of UHMW plow edges including our Standard Duty UHMW Edge and our Commercial Duty UHMW Edge. We are offering these two UHMW edges and also offering the chance to purchase the heavy steel strap used for the UHMW or rubber plow edges. The CTA Strap is the same size, shape and style as CTA sells on new plows when the UHMW edge is selected.

We custom cut all of our UHMW plow edges and our mounting straps on computer controlled laser or water jet cutting machines to produce a superior product which will take your CTA plow to it’s peak performance level.

Our Standard Duty UHMW Edge

(1) UHMW Plow Edges, 5” tall x 1” thick

Corrosion Resistant Coated Hardware Set

Our Commercial Duty UHMW Edge

1 UHMW Plow Edge, 6” tall x 1.25” thick

Corrosion Resistant Coated Hardware Set

Please see Footnote 1 at the end of this page about the images used in our product listings. Thank you.

Due to the thickness of our plow edges, plows standard bolts won’t fit as they are too short. Plus a new plow edge is time for new hardware to avoid rust and corrosion and make installation and adjustments easier. The price includes this full hardware set.

Plow UHMW Edge(s) Details

Our Plow edge UHMW material is machined ready to install. We don’t ship you a project which needs to be cut and machined to install it. Our edge is ready to bolt onto your plow. We even include the new set of Corrosion Resistant Hardware to complete the installation.

Depending upon the width of the edge and the plow’s design, the UHMW material is made one of two ways.

  • With Square shouldered holes cut into the UHMW to allow carriage bolts to secure the UHMW edge.

  • Or the edge will have vertical slots in the material where the UHMW mounts, to make the edge material easier to install, adjust the remaining material under the plow edge and to flip the UHMW edge over when the first side is worn.

  • This assures maximum use of the entire UHMW edge, first the bottom edge when installed. As that edge wears, the edge can be adjusted to use 100% of the available material.

  • After all, this material is quite expensive and we want to make sure the UHMW is able to used as completely as possible before the edge first has to be flipped over and then once both sides have been worn.

  • Please note, if the UHMW is machined with the vertical slots for installation, we will be including Corrosion Resistant Cap Screws, with large flat washers to install the UHMW edge on the plow. The Cap Screws allow vertical adjustments by simply loosening the cap screw and moving the UHMW edge accordingly.

The manner in which these UHMW edges are machined provides room for the hardware to clear the actual UHMW, to prevent binding of the edge with the hardware. This also provides limited horizontal adjustment of the plow edge UHMW to keep these edges square and properly aligned on the plow moldboard lower edge.

UHMW Plow Edge Adjustments during use

As the bottom of the UHMW plow edge wears over time with use, its a simple process to loosen the bolts and slide the edges down the plow face, to maintain the proper clearing material beneath the plow edge. We suggest confirming the UHMW plow edge extension beneath the plow with a simple tape measure. Our machining process permits side to side adjustments as well as some vertical adjustments, to keep the wear edge square on the pavement.

When the first side of the UHMW Plow edges are worn down, its simply a matter of removing the hardware, removing the UHMW edge, flipping it over and reinstalling it, to start with a new side of the edges. Realigned after repositioning them, you start over with full material to begin the use of these second edges. This approach doubles the effective wear life and functional duration of these very robust UHMW plow edges.

The Steel CTA Plow Edge Strap

  • The Steel Plow Edge Mounting Strap for maximum UHMW edge support, is approximately 6” shorter than the width of the plow edge, it’s about 3” wide and 3/16” thick steel. The steel plow strap is cut with square mounting holes for the strap to be secured to the plow with our carriage bolts and other hardware.

  • The strap is purpose shaped so it provides special edge clamping strength. The straps edges are machine formed at an angle so the plow edge receives full width clamping of the strap, instead of it being a simple flat plate.

  • Our straps are purposely machined shorter than the plow moldboard’s entire width to provide protection for the plow and UHMW edge strap when the plow is angled during use. We want the ends of these straps to be set back from the edge of the actual plow rubber, to provide a protection zone on each side of the plow, should the plow edge strike any solid or fixed objects.

  • This allows the ends of the UHMW plow edge to flex slightly and absorb impacts during use, while not directly impacting the mounting straps which secure the UHMW plow edge to the moldboard.

Hardware Set Includes

Full Set of Corrosion Resistant Coated Hardware of 5- 1/2” Carriage bolts with flat washers and Nylock Nuts. Depending upon the plows size, the edge style and the other choices made, we may ship corrosion resistant cap screws with flat washers for securing the plow UHMW edge. The hardware is specifically chosen to provide maximum clamping strength to secure the plow strap holding the UHMW plow edge in place.

A special note about working with Corrosion Resistant Coated Hardware.

Its important to always lubricate the hardware with a lubricant such as silicone spray or other suitable hardware lubricant. The lubricant protects the hardware threads against galling or heat from the surface friction when tightening the hardware. Lubricating the hardware is also important in the proper torquing of the hardware for proper clamping and holding strength.

We discourage the use of Impact Tools to install your plow Edge hardware

It’s also important to avoid using impact tools for the hardware installation or removal as the operational speed of the impact can cause heat in the hardware threads. This heat can cause the corrosion coated finish on the hardware to gall or “cold weld”. This must be avoided to make the hardware remain fully functional and able to be reused as needed for plow edge adjustments, etc.

The impact tools also “pound” on the hardware in their normal operational function, as they tighten and loosen the bolts. This pounding builds heat in the hardware, along with the speed at which the impact turns the hardware. This heat from the tools operational speed is a leading source of the hardware damage from galling which leads to the hardware being “cold welded”.

This impact tool “pounding” can cause damage to the square shoulders on the mounting holes in the straps and reduce their proper holding and clamping strength. We suggest using hand tools to install the hardware to avoid the excessive speed and hardware pounding which the impact tools use in their normal operation.

Please follow the specific hardware torque specifications outlined in the detailed installation instructions included with the UHMW Edge Kit for best long term results.

Installation of your new Plow Edge and or Kit

Each UHMW edge or kit is shipped with detailed installation instructions.

  • Total installation time will depend upon each individuals mechanical experience, the work environment and tools used. But the typical edge kit installation is completed within 10 to 30 minutes or less, in most situations. Its really a very straight forward process.

  • Subsequent maintenance during plow use is to monitor the amount of UHMW edge extending beneath the plow moldboard, checking to assure the edge remains properly aligned during use and keeping the hardware secured. Cleaning the plow and edge periodically to remove snow melt products and any dirt, etc is also suggested.

  • Typical UHMW wear duration for our UHMW plow edges is much longer than most people expect. Having our standard duty edges last for 600 to 800 driveway plows is very common. Our more robust edges provide even longer wear life.

  • Proper plow edge down pressure plays a vital role in the plows function and wear life. Avoid excessive down pressure on the plow edge as it simply wears the edge more rapidly than necessary as well as negatively impacting the tractors steering and control.

  • The UHMW Plow edge is strong enough to store the plow between use with the UHMW plow edge supporting the full weight of the plow.
