CTA Style, Steel Strap Option
We have added another option to your choices where you can purchase a CTA Steel Strap for your CTA Plow or Pusher. The CTA Steel Strap is sold seperately in it’s own listing and is sold for all CTA Snow Plows and Snow Pushers.
This CTA Steel Strap is a very robust steel plate made of plate steel and formed so the strap edges have a special angular shape to enhance its clamping ability. which is then powder coated for a premium finish. You can use the Steel Strap to secure any of the rubber edges or UHMW edges on the CTA Plows as well as the Snow Pushers. Please note, make sure to read the Steel Strap listing carefully as there are differences in the steel straps used on the Plows and the Snow pushers.
Ordering Tips to help you decide what to purchase
When you purchase our Standard Rubber Plow Edge Kit, our Heavy Duty Rubber Plow Edge Kit or our Extreme Duty Rubber Plow Edge Kit, you will receive the rubber edge material described in the listing, as well as our UHMW strap to mount the plow edge and our full set of hardware.
If the plow owner already has been using a rubber edge and needs to replace or upgrade it, ordering just the Rubber Edge ONLY, prevents them purchasing a UHMW Mounting strap they likely won’t need.
As long as they have a strap from their prior rubber edge use or they have the CTA steel strap which is sold on their plows with the UHMW edge when new, they should have the strap needed to secure any Rubber Edge Only kit they purchase.
Please note, you CAN NOT use the plow’s steel plow edge as a rubber edge mounting strap. The steel plow edge is too tall as well as sharp on the bottom from grinding on the pavement. The steel plow edge will not only damage your new rubber plow edge, it will prevent the rubber from working properly due to being too tall.
Purchase the Rubber Edge Only or the Rubber Edge Kit, in the duty level you desire.
We sell our Plow Edge Rubber in the sizes and combinations described above. When you purchase our “Rubber Edge Only” in a specific category, you will receive
· the rubber edge in that description
· Corrosion Resistant Hardware kit to aid in your installation of the new plow edge rubber. The plow mounting strap is NOT included in your shipment.
How we make our Rubber Plow Edges
Our Plow edge material is machined with vertical adjustment slots. These machined slots in the rubber
assure easily installation of the rubber edge(s).
provide a wear edge that is double-sided and provides an extended wear life by allowing the rubber edges to be flipped over when needed.
allows for full adjustment in either vertical installation as well as providing some horizontal adjustment as the wear edge wears
permits optimal rubber material adjustment below the plows lower edge for best results.
helps the owner keep the rubber edge squared to the plow and pavement, due to the wide adjustment range.
The machined slots in the rubber edge facilitate easy installation and subsequent adjustments of your plow rubber, ensuring the plow edge remains square across the base of the plow moldboard.
The machining of these rubber plow edges provides clearance for the hardware to prevent binding between the rubber and the hardware. This also offers limited horizontal adjustment of the plow rubber to keep these edges square and properly aligned on the plow moldboard.
We custom-cut all of our plow edges and mounting straps on computer-controlled laser or water-jet cutting machines to produce a superior product that will take your CTA plow to the next level. When you order from our company, we want you to get exactly what you need and want, and we don’t want you to have to buy unwanted kits or packages if they include items you don’t want or need to purchase.
Why our CTA Rubber Edges and Kits Ship with New Hardware
We include new hardware with the rubber edge-only purchase option for a few reasons. These include
· The thickness of our rubber edges prevents most plow hardware from reaching through the edges to properly and securely mount them. Therefore, we include the new hardware.
· Often, the existing plow hardware is worn, rusty, or corroded, and working with hardware that has corrosion just means more trouble later when we need to adjust or flip over the edges.
Many times, the hardware on the plow needs to be replaced due to wear and damage. Nice new plow rubber edge demands new corrosion resistant hardware so you don’t have to fight with the old hardware.
Plow Edge Adjustments during use.
As the bottom of the plow rubber wears over time with use, you should adjust the rubber edge to ensure proper function and maximize the effectiveness of your plow edge in cleaning the pavement. Adjusting the rubber edge is a simple process. Loosen the bolts and slide the edges down the plow face to maintain the proper rubber-clearing material beneath the plow edge.
We suggest 1.5” to 2” of material below the plow. This is easy to confirm using a simple tape measure. Our machining process enables side-to-side adjustments, as well as limited vertical adjustments, to maintain the wear edge square on the pavement.
When the first side of the rubber edges are worn down, removing the hardware, flip over the rubber plow edge, keeping the thicker of the two edges against the face of the plow and reinstalling the hardware. Make sure to provide the distance under the blade as well as keeping the rubber square to the plow. Now you have doubled the practical wear life and functional duration of these very robust rubber plow edges.
Plow Edge Strap Details
Custom-machined UHMW Plow Edge Mounting Strap for maximum edge support. The UHMW Strap will be about 8” to 10” shorter than the actual plow width, the protect the ends of the strap The plow strap is cut with square mounting holes, allowing it to be secured to the plow with our carriage bolts and other hardware. Our straps are purposely machined to be shorter than the plow moldboard’s entire width, providing protection for the plow edge and strap when the plow is angled during use. We want the ends of these straps to be set back from the edge of the actual plow rubber, providing a protection zone on each side of the plow in case the plow edge strikes any solid or fixed objects. This set back distance allows the ends of the plow rubber to flex and absorb impacts during use while not directly impacting the straps which secure the plow rubber to the moldboard.
Our UHMW straps can’t rust, won’t bend, and won’t be easily damaged, as this material is some TOUGH stuff. It never needs to be painted or powder coated; the straps are a solid black color.
Our straps are purposely made in sections to make the handling, installation, and shipping of these straps simpler by keeping the strap length down to half or another fractional length of the plow's entire width. The sections are marked for easy installation. Using these sections also provides more effortless adjustment of the plow edge at installation and periodically during its use.
Hardware Set Includes
Complete Set of corrosion-resistant coated hardware, including 5-1/2” Carriage bolts with flat washers and Nylock Nuts. The hardware is specifically chosen to provide maximum clamping strength, securing the plow straps that hold the plow edges in place.
A special note about working with Corrosion Resistant Coated Hardware.
It's important to constantly lubricate the hardware with a lubricant such as silicone spray or other suitable hardware lubricant. The lubricant protects the hardware threads against galling or heat from the surface friction when tightening the hardware. Lubricating the hardware is also important for proper torquing, ensuring adequate clamping and holding strength.
It’s also important to avoid using impact tools for the hardware installation or removal, as the operational speed of the impact can cause heat in the hardware threads. This heat can cause the corrosion-coated finish on the hardware to gall or “cold weld.” This must be avoided to ensure the hardware remains fully functional and can be reused as needed for plow edge adjustments, etc.
The impact tools also “pound” on the hardware in their everyday operational function, as they tighten and loosen the bolts. This pounding builds heat in the hardware, along with the speed at which the impact turns the hardware. This heat from the tool's operational speed is a leading source of the hardware damage from galling, which leads to the hardware being “cold welded”.
This impact tool's “pounding” can cause damage to the square shoulders on the mounting holes in the straps, reducing their proper holding and clamping strength. We suggest using hand tools to install the hardware, as they avoid the excessive speed and pounding that impact tools use in their regular operation.
Please follow the specific hardware torque specifications outlined in the detailed installation instructions included with the Edge Kit for optimal long-term results.
Installation of your new Plow Edge and or Kit
Each edge or kit is shipped with detailed installation instructions.
Total installation time will depend on each individual's mechanical experience, the work environment, and the tools used. However, the typical edge kit installation is typically completed within 20 to 30 minutes or less in most cases. It's really a very straightforward process.
Subsequent maintenance during plow use involves monitoring the amount of rubber edge extending beneath the plow moldboard, checking to ensure the edge remains properly aligned during use and keeping the hardware secured. Cleaning the plow and edge periodically to remove snowmelt products and any dirt is also suggested.
The typical wear duration for our plow edges is significantly longer than most people expect. Having our standard duty edges last for 300 to 400 driveway plows is very common. Our more robust edges provide even longer wear life.
Proper plow edge-down pressure plays a vital role in the plow's function and wear life. Avoid excessive down pressure on the plow edge, as it wears the edge more rapidly than necessary and negatively impacts the tractor's steering and control.
Store the plow between use with the plow supported by either its plow shoes or using another method. Allowing the rubber edge to be stored without plow weight on it will extend its useful wear life and function.
