The difference in our CTA Plow
Steel Plow Edge Strap
and our UHMW Plow Edge Strap
Steel Plow Strap is a square-cut gauge steel plow strap that holds the carriage bolts to secure your plow's rubber edge properly. The steel strap is powder-coated in green to match the CTA Plows. It’s made to match the steel strap used on new CTA plows when the UHMW plow edge is ordered. Due to its finish requirements and size variables, the steel strap can require additional production time. Please allow 14 business days following the order for the steel strap to be produced and finished before shipping.
Our UHMW Strap is machine cut from UHMW and made to be as wide as possible for maximum clamping strength and to not interfere with the plow's function. The UHMW is black and a composite plastic material. It's not painted or powder coated and retains its natural finish for life.
Steel and UHMW Straps, Advantages and Disadvantages
The Steel is stiffer and heavier and requires painting or powder coating. It’s able to have the finish nicked or scratched, which can lead to rusting. Its clamping strength is outstanding. However, it can be twisted and bent, impairing its function and possibly requiring replacement.
The UHMW is lighter and has some flexibility. The UHMW can’t be painted, nor does it require any finishing. Its color is present throughout the entire material, so if it is nicked or scratched, no corrosion or change to the edge color occurs. Its clamping strength is substantial and more than adequate for this use. UHMW flexes and twists slightly and returns to its original shape. Extreme impacts could fracture the UHMW, requiring its replacement, but such an impact would also bend or damage the steel, likely also requiring its replacement.
We often use the UHMW because it's easier to work with, easier for one person to install, lighter to ship, and requires no maintenance from the customer. But in this case, we also offer the steel strap because the clamping strength to hold this extensive rubber edge is significant. It really comes down to a personal choice for most customers. I use both UHMW and Steel and am pleased with both.
PLEASE FOLLOW OUR BOLT TORQUING INSTRUCTIONS
When installing this Extreme Duty Plow Edge, the size of the edge and its hardware can result in customers using excessive bolt tightening when installing the edge. In particular, using the steel strap often encourages the plow owners to over-tighten the plow edge hardware. We strongly discourage this as over-tightening the hardware displaces the rubber edges, distorts the rubber, and can impair its function
It can also damage the UHMW straps if an impact tool is used for installation. The impact tool “pounds” on the hardware, which can damage the stainless finish and round out the square holes in the UHMW straps. The speed of the impact tool can also cause the finish of the stainless hardware to be “galled”, which can result in the stainless hardware cold welding. This can make future adjustments more complicated and can require subsequently changing to cap screws instead of carriage bolts to tighten, loosen and make necessary adjustments properly.
We always suggest lubricating stainless hardware with a silicone spray or similar lubricant suited for use on hardware before installation, tightening, and removal. The hardware lubricant use is assumed in the hardware torque specification provided.
As a result, we strongly suggest that clients avoid using impact tools to install these products and follow the proper bolt torque guidelines provided in the instructions.
*IMPORTANT NOTE - Our Extreme Duty Rubber Kit REQUIRES the CTA steel plow edge mounting strap or plate. This steel plate/strap is used to hold on either the original CTA UHMW Plow edge or the original CTA Plow rubber edge when the plow is sold new.
It’s a steel plate which has angular sides and its about 3” wide and 6” shorter than the plows width. It mounts across the center of the plow edge to secure it properly to the plow.
If you do not have this steel plate / strap specifically made to hold the plow edges on the CTA Plows, please order our plow edge KIT. Our kit includes a choice of our UHMW or the Steel Strap / Plate to properly hold this plow edge.
