UHMW Edges.
The UHMW Plow Edges are fully machined and ready to install on your plow. No cutting, no drilling, no “construction projects”. We do all of the machining in house so its easier for you to install when you receive it.
This material is very expensive, as sheet of the material which is the size of a sheet of plywood, at 48”x 96” costs between $1,100 and $1,450. It’s imperative the material not be wasted and the product not made with excess material which doesn’t improve its performance or wear results.
Design and important details we machine into your new UHMW Plow Wear edge
It’s fully adjustable, to use 100% of the total wear edge by adjusting it as wear occurs.
The UHMW Plow edge is double sided. Wear out the first side, remove it, flip it over and reinstall it with an entirely new edge.
Wears better than mild steel when the correct plow down pressure is used.
Quiet, non surface marring or damaging like the steel edges.
Installing the new UHMW plow Edge.
The edge is ready to install. The process is very simple. Here are the steps.
Remove the steel plow wear edge and hardware. Keep the bolts and nuts with the steel edge as they won’t fit other plow edges.
Be careful as the steel plow edge is heavy and sharp edged from grinding on the pavement. Make sure to wear gloves as the steel edge can give painful steel splinters.
Clean the plow where the steel plow edge was mounted. Remove dirt, debris, etc.
If there is any paint missing or rust on the plow, we suggest you repair and repaint those areas.
Consider waxing or treating the plow moldboard to protect the finish and also make the snow slide easier off the surface.
Install the new UHMW Plow edge using our mounting system and hardware.
Depending upon the plows condition, the entire process can be as short as 10 to 15 minutes or up to an hour.
Why we revolutionized and modified the plow wear edge Steel Straps
Working with the steel mounting straps which were 5’, 6’ and even 8’ and 10’ long is like wrestling with an alligator when you are trying to hold the plow rubber or UHMW in a vertical position, place the strap on the edge and insert hardware. At best its a two person job. At worse, you drop it on your foot a few times and start over with the install because its hard to install the full length wear edges and straps by yourself, especially when the plow is on the machine.
So here is how we have changed these mounting straps.
Shortened them to be between 12” and 49” in length.
The holes are rectangular cut to accept the shanks on the carriage bolts.
The straps have horizontal adjustment slots to allow for a range of mounting hole positions.
The straps can be overlapped to maximize their strength if needed.
Their shorter length makes shipping them much easier and less expensive.
They take up less room in the warehouse
Easily installed while working alone and it allows for sectional or partial adjustments of the wear edges.
Why we selected steel mounting straps for UHMW Plow edges.
At SBS, LLC, we have been using our UHMW material to help secure the rubber plow edges for plows between 54” wide and 72” wide. The UHMW strap has worked very well securing the rubber plow edges with the carriage bolts holding the UHMW strap on the rubber edge.
But a UHMW Edge requires a Steel Mounting Strap, because the use of UHMW as both the plow edge and the mounting strap places two layers of this very low friction, very low sliding resistance material together. The UHMW has such low surface friction, that placing two layers of it together doesn’t allow the strap to properly secure the edge. Therefore, when using the UHMW Plow Edge, we use the Steel Mounting Straps to secure the UHMW to the steel plow face. On some sizes of the UHMW, we use our “Individual Mounting Plates”.
Ideally, you want the surface between the plow wear edge and the clamping strap to be one where the materials “lock together”, more than slide away from one another. The steel strap, even in short sections, works great for securing the UHMW edge. It also works equally well holding the rubber plow edge on the steel plow moldboard.
Making the steel straps in lengths of 12” to 36” makes the process much easier. You can install and adjust sections of the plow edge, instead of wrestling with it like its a 10’ Bayou Alligator……
These new steel straps are being made in lengths of 12” to 36” and they have rectangular holes to properly hold the carriage bolt shoulders for carriage bolts in the 5/16” to 3/4” size range. This will make the application of straps more “universal” and the handling and installation of them easier.
The manner in which these UHMW edges are machined provides room for the hardware to clear the actual UHMW, to prevent binding of the edge with the hardware. This also provides limited horizontal adjustment of the plow edge UHMW to keep these edges square and properly aligned on the plow moldboard lower edge. We put more engineering into the mounting of these UHMW wear edges than most put into all of their plow edge options combined.
UHMW Plow Edge Adjustments during use
As the bottom of the UHMW plow edge wears over time with use, its a simple process to loosen the bolts and slide the edges down the plow face, to maintain the proper clearing material beneath the plow edge. We suggest confirming the UHMW plow edge extension beneath the plow with a simple tape measure. Our machining process permits side to side adjustments as well as some vertical adjustments, to keep the wear edge square on the pavement.
When the first side of the UHMW Plow edges are worn down, its simply a matter of removing the hardware, removing the UHMW edge, flipping it over and reinstalling it, to start with a new side of the edges. Realigned after repositioning them, you start over with full material to begin the use of these second edges. This approach doubles the effective wear life and functional duration of these very robust UHMW plow edges.
Hardware Set Includes
Full Set of Corrosion Resistant Coated Hardware
5-8 bolts of 1/2” to 5/8” size, matching the original hardware diameter on the plow.
Our hardware set includes the bolts, with flat washers and Nylock Nuts.
Depending upon the plows size, the edge style and the other choices made, we may ship corrosion resistant cap screws with flat washers for securing the plow UHMW edge*
. The hardware is specifically chosen to provide maximum clamping strength to secure the plow strap holding the UHMW plow edge in place while also resisting corrosion, which could impede future adjustments of the UHMW plow edge.
A special note about working with Corrosion Resistant Coated Hardware.
Its important to always follow these use tips when working with this hardware.
lubricate the hardware with silicone spray or other suitable hardware lubricant.
The lubricant protects the hardware threads against galling or heat from the surface friction when tightening the hardware.
Lubricating the hardware is also important in the proper torquing of the hardware for proper clamping and holding strength.
We discourage the use of Impact Tools to install your plow Edge hardware
While using an impact tool to remove the steel plow edge and hardware is fine, we discourage using the impact tool to install the new UHMW Plow wear edge and corrosion resistant hardware. The reasons why include
the operational speed of the impact tool can cause heat in the hardware threads.
This heat can cause the corrosion coated finish on the hardware to gall or “cold weld”.
This must be avoided to make the hardware remain fully functional and able to be reused as needed for plow edge adjustments, etc.
The impact tools also “pound” on the hardware in their normal operational function, as they tighten and loosen the bolts.
This impact tool “pounding” can cause damage to the square shoulders on the mounting holes in the straps and reduce their proper holding and clamping strength.
We suggest using hand tools to install the hardware to avoid the excessive speed and hardware pounding which the impact tools use in their normal operation.
Please follow the included UHMW Plow Edge installation and use instructions for best results. hardware torque specifications outlined in the detailed installation and edge use instructions included with the UHMW Edge Kit for best long term results.
Tools Needed for the Replacement of the Steel Plow Wear edge
include Metric and SAE sockets and ratchet. Extensions and battery powered tools can help speed up the process, just use caution and not over tighten or gall the plow edge hardware. Please see the detailed instruction sheet accompanying your new plow edge.
Installation of your new Plow Edge and or Kit
Each UHMW edge or kit is shipped with detailed installation instructions.
Total installation time will depend upon each individuals mechanical experience, the work environment and tools used. But the typical edge kit installation is completed within 10 to 30 minutes or less, in most situations. Its really a very straight forward process.
Subsequent maintenance during plow use is to monitor the amount of UHMW edge extending beneath the plow moldboard, checking to assure the edge remains properly aligned during use and keeping the hardware secured. Cleaning the plow and edge periodically to remove snow melt products and any dirt, etc is also suggested.
Typical UHMW wear duration for our UHMW plow edges is much longer than most people expect. Having our standard duty edges last for 600 to 800 driveway plows is very common. Our more robust edges provide even longer wear life.
Proper plow edge down pressure plays a vital role in the plows function and plow edge wear life. Avoid excessive down pressure on the plow edge as it simply wears the edge more rapidly than necessary as well as negatively impacting the tractors steering and control.
Make sure to adjust your plow shoes so they are not making contact with the pavement surface when the UHMW edge is clearing the pavement. The plow shoes will only cause abrasion damage to the pavement which should be avoided.
It is suggested that when storing the plow long term between use, the plow shoes carry the load of the plow and the wear edge be suspended off the pavement to avoid unnecessary weight or pressure on the plow edge.
