The CTA Heavy Duty Loader Mounted Plow demands a robust and significant UHMW wear edge and we make it. Did you know the The 72” Plow weighs 700#+ and the 84” Plow weighs 850#+? The edges MUST be right or they won’t survive their use on these plows.

Yes, we actually cut these edges out of bulk material, using our computer controlled, laser guided water jet technology. We make these edges to perfectly fit YOUR Plow. We use our computer models for the precise hole alignment and to properly cut the edges,

We have extensive experience making plow edges for these plows. Whether they are rubber or UHMW, we make sure the edge you purchase is designed and built for your plow and how you plan to use it.

We offer two thicknesses for these larger and heavier plows. These thicknesses are based upon what will work the best on the plow Here are our offerings for these plows.

Our Commercial Duty UHMW Plow Edge

This is a 1.5” thick UHMW plow edge for the 72” and 84” CTA Plows.

Our Severe Duty UHMW Plow Edge

This is a 2” thick UHMW wear edge for the 72” and 84” CTA Plows

What do you need to decide to order our UHMW Plow Wear Edge?

  1. Decide if you want the UHMW to be our Commercial 1.5” thick Plow edge or our Severe Duty Plow Edge, which is 2” thick. ?

  2. Decide if you want the single sided UHMW wear bar or our Double Sided wear bar, the prices are displayed as you select the size, etc.

  3. Put your purchase in the cart and provide your customer information and the payment method and you are done.

Our Single Sided UHMW wear bars are 3” tall. When the wear edge is worn on the single sided UHMW bars, it needs to be replaced.

  1. Common Questions and Answers about our UHMW Plow Edge Wear bars

Q. 1.- Why would someone buy the single sided UHMW wear bar?

A.-1 - To reduce their costs and try the UHMW to make sure they like it and it works for their needs.

Q.-2. Why isn’t the price for the single sided wear bar ½ of the double sided wear bar?

A. - 2. Because the machining and shipping costs are the same for both bars and the less UHMW material is the only cost savings. We provide the best price we can for a top quality edge.

Q. 3.- Why would someone not like the UHMW Plow Edge?

A.3.- Our experience is that most users (probably 95%+) are very pleased. However, those with “delicate” pavement such as brick pavers, imprinted concrete, colored concrete, new asphalt, etc. need to be careful so they don’t damage the pavement. Its very easy to do with large tractors and heavy plows.

Q.-4.-What is the biggest mistake people make clearing snow with FEL Plows?

A.- 4. Excessive down pressure on the plow. Many throw the FEL into “Float” automatically and often, its more pressure than needed, so it impacts tractor steering, etc. The best approach is to lower the plow edge and when its on the pavement, stop there and clear the snow. Don’t apply more down pressure than needed as its counter productive.

Q. 5.- How accurate is the 100 driveway clearing estimate for the single sided UHMW edge?

A. 5.- It’s very conservative from my own experience. I would rather have the plow edge last 200 plow events when the customer is expecting 100 plowing events, than the other way around. My own personal experience with these UHMW edges is I have cleared more than 1,000 residential drives with a UHMW edge which is 1” thick. Bottom line, if the operator controls the down pressure and uses the edge correctly, its going to last a long time.

2.Single Side verses Double Sided UHMW Wear bars, which is right for you?

Why do we offer the single sided UHMW wear bars? It’s a way for plow owners to buy a UHMW wear bar and enjoy it and use it, but save some money over the double sided wear bars. It’s an introduction to the UHMW wear bar for those who are unsure they will love the UHMW but they want to try the proper material, made to fit their plow.

3.How long does the UHMW wear material Last?

Using proper plow down pressure and using the edge correctly, you should be able to plow a typical residential driveway of 300’ in length and 12’ wide, 75 to 100 times. For the homeowner who plows their driveway 20 times a winter, they should get 4 winters out of the edge. The double sided wear bar will last at least twice as long due to two wear edges and the amount of material.

4.Who should consider a UHMW Plow Wear Edge?

The customer who has these priorities and preferences;

  • Wants to dramatically reduce the pavement surface abrasion and damage which comes from steel plow edges.

  • Wants the power and strength in the edge to scrape the pavement of snow and ice, but not with the abrasion damage of a steel plow edge.

  • The UHMW is very durable, its the lowest surface friction wear material made for snow clearing implements. It’s also quieter as it reduces the “banging” and “scraping / scratching / screeching” of the steel on pavement.

  • As good as the UHMW material is at protecting the pavement from surface abrasion damage, what does the plow owner need to know ab out using a UHMW plow wear edge?

    • They can strip out pavement repairs such as crack filling, pothole repairs, pavement top coats and sealers.

    • If you have uneven pavement edges, transition points, expansion joints or other surface cracks or imperfections, the UHMW edge will strike those in some cases, harshly.

    • The UHMW is very tough and durable. But just be aware such harsh impacts can damage the hitch, the tractor mount, the plow itself or even cause operator injuries. If your pavement has an uneven surface or has endured extensive repairs and upkeep, be careful with a UHMW edge as the material is strong enough and sharp edged enough to strip out previous repairs.

  • Also, if you have asphalt which is less than 12 months old, be careful the UHMW doesn’t gouge or cause damage to the asphalt with the UHMW edges or corners. If any of these items concern you, we suggest you consider one of our Rubber Edges or Kits to prevent pavement damage.

5,Hardware - Our UHMW Plow Edges ship with our Corrosion Resistant Hardware to install these on your plow. We use top quality American Sourced SAE Hardware. Your edge will include either carriage bolts or Cap screws along with flat washers and Nylock nuts. Plows this size use 5/8” or 3/4” diameter bolts and most local hardwares don’t carry these, so we hship the hardware with itt,

The hardware we ship if top quality and allows you to install our edge on your plow the day you receive it. We ship the UHMW with Square Cut Holes in the UHMW to hold the Carriage Bolts Shank to secure the plow edge. If you decide you would rather have Cap Screws with large flat washers under the bolt heads to hold the UHMW on your plow, simply let us know. We will send you just what you want.

6.Shipping- Our UHMW edges ship in their full length. We wrap the UHMW in either shrink wrap of a poly shipping bag or in cardboard to protect the edge during shipping Due to its length and weight Oversize Shipping Charges Apply. We factor those into the price you pay for these edges. Basically, being so long, the shipping costs are double to triple what they would be for anything else which has the same weight. That’s a fact of shipping long things.’

7.Installation time- 10 to 15 minutes in most cases with basic tools.

8.Safety reminders and important points.

Special words of caution when changing your plow’s cutting edge. Please read and heed our caution, we don’t want to see anyone injured or worse.

  • The steel plow edge is very heavy, expect it to weigh 100 to 135 pounds so be careful when removing it.

  • The steel plow edge is usually sharp from grinding on the pavement. Wear gloves to handle these edges.

  • Our UHMW Edge is lighter but still relatively heavy. Our UHMW edges weigh 30 to 40 pounds to install, so an extra set of hands are a good idea.

  • Please refrain from using an impact gun, as it pounds on the hardware. The speed the impact spins the hardware can cause galling of the hardware, which can lead to cold welding of the bolts. You don’t want that to happen.

  • The impact also can damage the square holes in the UHMW edge and allow the carriage bolts to spin. We don’t want the carriage bolts to spin in the edge and be hard to remove.

  • Please use proper jack stands and support tools when working on equipment. Don’t trust hydraulic lines and cylinders to always hold up components as failures do happen.

  • Should you have any questions or concerns, please call us.

We ship our UHMW Edges in their full length, with all of the mounting holes machine cut and ready to install. Most plow owners can change their steel plow edges to our UHMW wear edges in 10 to 15 minutes, It’s simple. Just make sure to follow the safety procedures and do NOT work UNDER raised plows or any implement without properly supporting the implement with jack stands, etc. Do not trust hydraulic cylinders and lines to support the plow without any extra mechanical support as things happen.

Also, when the plows are this large, the edges are HEAVY. The steel plow edge on the 84” CTA H.D. FEL Plow weighs 110 to 130 pounds. The steel plow edges are often worn very sharp and now you have a very heavy and razor sharp 100+ pound steel edge which is 6 to 7 feet long. Use care and caution.

9.Should I buy UHMW remnants and make my own edge?

Should you buy a “kit” and make the UHMW Plow edge yourself? Do you save money buying a “Do it Yourself Kit” with remnant UHMW Material? This is where you buy parts and pieces and piece them together to make your own UHMW edge.

No you don’t. First, the material is costly. Plus there are 58 different plastic materials in the supplier we purchase our material from. The best UHMW material is costly. How costly? Many who sell the “kits” or “remnants” sell their UHMW Material at $0.88 to $1.29 per SQ INCH is common. That means a UHMW wear bar which is 6” tall and 84” long, is 504 sq inches.

One mistake or wrong cut, improper hole location, can be an expensive error. A simple mistake can easily wipe out $100’s of dollars in material. Plus, if you use traditional carpentry tools to cut this material, WOW, does it make a mess.

We know, as that’s how we started. I strongly suggest you purchase a ready made UHMW plow edge, custom made for YOUR PLOW. We make plow edges for a living, so we know the right distances, the proper set back dimensions, how far to leverage the material and not risk damaging the edge or your plow. We use computer controlled cutting machines which are working off our prints which have already produced hundreds of plow edges for these plows, so we know its right.
