CTA Heavy Duty Front End Loader Plows, 72” and 84” Wide.

CTA’s two largest plows demand a rubber plow edge worthy of their size and weight. While we normally offer 3 levels of rubber plow edges for our CTA plows which are 54’ to 72” wide, due to these H.D. Plows being the largest they make and so much heavier due to their size, we are going to limit our rubber plow edge offering to two choices.

Heavy Duty and Extreme Duty Rubber Plow Edges

When properly making plow edges, it’s critical to include more than simply the width of the plow in the selection of the materials for the plow edge. Here are the primary factors we use when designing these plow edges for the plows. I should mention, there are numerous secondary issues which we also consider.

Primary Factors in this Plow’s rubber edge creation process include

  • Plow weight, the 72” plow weighs 700# and the 84” plow weighs 850#+

  • The size of the machine on which the plows are intended for use.

  • The front end loader size category and lifting capacities

  • Quality of the plow, and CTA is as good as they get. Many other brands are not as well made or regarded and use lower quality materials, etc.

Our plow offerings for these two plows are going to robust. In fact we are going to only produce our two highest level and most durable kits, our Heavy Duty and Extreme Duty Edges. Here are our rubber plow edge offerings for the

Compact Tractor Attachments

72” or 84” Heavy Duty Front End Loader Mounted Plow

Heavy Duty Rubber Plow Edge

Includes (1) 3/4” x 6” rubber plow edge and (1) 1/2” x 6” rubber plow edge, placing 1.25” of rubber cleaning edge surface on the pavement

Our UHMW Mounting Strap which is 3” shorter than the plows full width. The Strap will be cut from 1.25” thick UHMW and will be approximately 3.5” in width when mounted on the plow.

Corrosion Resistant Hardware Kit

Extreme Duty Duty Rubber Plow edge

Includes (2) 3/4” x 6” rubber plow edge mounted together, providing 1.5” of rubber pavement clearing edge surface on the pavement.

Our UHMW Mounting Strap, which is 3” shorter than the plow’s full width and the strap is made from 1.25” thick UHMW which will be roughly 3.5” in width when mounted on the plow.

Special Note.

When you order a Heavy Duty Kit or and Extreme Duty Kit and you selected the Steel Strap Option, your kit will ship with the steel CTA version of the Metal Strap, which is a 2 piece strap as mentioned elsewhere in this post.

NO UHMW Strap will be included. If you order a Heavy Duty or Extreme Duty Kit and did NOT select the Steel strap option, your kit will ship with the UHMW strap and no Steel strap will be included. When the UHMW strap ships, the hardware kit will be comprised of Cap screws in place of the carriage bolts.

When ordering a “Kit” and selecting the Steel Strap option, the steel strap will replace the UHMW strap. The price of the Kit options when the Steel Strap is selected, includes the credit for not receiving a UHMW strap for your CTA Plow. When you order a steel strap, you will get the the carriage bolts to work with the square cut holes in the steel strap.

The hardware is different due to our concerns over some customers using impact guns on the plow edge installation. Impact guns on carriage bolts in the UHMW material could result in the square shank holes in the UHMW being distorted due to the impact guns pounding on the hardware.

Please make sure to lubricate the hardware and follow all hardware torque specifications to avoid damage to the plow edge straps, the plow edges or the hardware itself. Also make sure to lubricate all hardware properly before tightening. It impacts the proper torque values of the hardware.

Common Questions About these plows use and these products include;

Q.- How long does it take to change from the steel plow edge to the rubber plow edge?

A. - Largely depending upon the owners mechanical skills, tools, physical condition, etc. plan on 20 to 30 minutes for the entire process.

Q.- Why do plow owners change to the rubber plow edges?

A. - Primarily to stop the surface damage to the pavement. The steel plow blade scrapes and scratches the pavement causing abrasion damage. This can lead to expensive repairs such as driveway resealing, repairs, etc.

Q. - How does the rubber plow edge clear snow from the pavement?

A.- The rubber edge does very well. If possible avoid driving over the snow before clearing it to get the best results. But if the snow is packed down, simply plow with normal down pressure and treat the hard pack or ice areas with snow melt and allow to loosen the hard pack. Repeat the plowing in 7 to 10 minutes and the plow will scrape away the treated areas, leaving the pavement cleared.

Q.- What are some advantages of the rubber edges which other plow edges can’t offer?

A.- The rubber plow edge is very good at removing wet snow and moisture from the pavement. This results in less water on the pavement and less moisture which can turn to ice.

The rubber edge also allows you to push snow onto the lawn and grass areas without destroying the turf and lawn areas. The rubber edge is also more gentle on irrigation heads, etc. In general, the rubber plow edge produces much less damage to the pavement, the lawn, etc, than the steel edge.

Q. - How long will the rubber edges last?

A.- When used correctly, the rubber edges routinely plow 400 to 500 residential driveways before needing to be replaced. A typical residential driveway is 300’ in length and 4,000 sq ft of pavement area.

Q.- As the owner of SBS, LLC which makes all the plow edges, which edge do I prefer for my own snow clearing duties?

A.- I plow 34 residential driveways each time it snows. It takes me about 3.5 to 4 hours to clear the snow each time I clear it. I use the rubber plow and rubber pusher edges. They are hands down my favorite and I have plowed about 800 driveways so far this winter (34 drives and I have plowed 28 times since Thanksgiving), which totals 952 driveways this winter alone. I am changing my rubber plow edge tomorrow, so my wear results were much higher than average. For most tractor owners, these edges will last for several years of use with normal conditions.

Q.- What is your ( my) favorite to least favorite plow edges in order?

Favoriter - Our SBS, LLC H.D. Rubber Plow edge

UHMW Plow Edge

High Impact (layered rubber and UHMW edges)

Mild Steel

MD400 or AS400 steel edges

Q.- What all do I like about the rubber plow edges?

A.- Quiet, no plow banging every time its lowered or hits an expansion joint. The rubber also cleans the pavement very well without any damage. No more pavement abrasion, No damaging the pavement crack sealers, no damage to pavement repairs, no more rust on the garage floor or pavement and the rubber glides over raised edges and expansion joints with minimal impact or noise.

CTA Plow Steel Strap Option

We produce a CTA Steel strap which is in two sections. It is made the same way the CTA strap is made, except we make it shorter to reduce shipping costs. The strap is made when ordered, so plan on a 15 business day time frame for production schedules. The strap also has to go through a finishing process, which takes time and adds extra costs.

When customers order our “Edge Only” option, they are getting the rubber edge kit they select with the corrosion resistant hardware kit.

When customers order “Edge Kit”, they will get the rubber edges and the UHMW plow mounting strap and hardware. If the customer selects the Edge Kit and the Steel Strap Option, they will get the rubber edges as described and they will get the Steel Strap. The steel strap will ship with the carriage bolt hardware. If the customer chooses the Edge Kit and UHMW Strap, they will get the UHMW strap and hardware with cap screws.
